why oh why must . . .

everybody have a blog?

Visit Spam?

Its happened twice now I think. My hit-counter jumps up a load and when I go to check it with SiteMeter, there's a big spike, and loads of closely timed visits all claiming to be from different blogs that don't link to mine.

Is this some kind of viral marketing ploy? Visit spam? Maybe its a SiteMeter feature? Designed to give you a warm, fuzzy feeling inside because people seem to be reading your site?

server

Does anybody else use SiteMeter? Is it something I should have known about?

You probably got hit by a referrer spammer - creating many hits in a short time. Take a look at http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/ref-karma/ - it will help you to a) catch them and know what is going on as well as deny them access and thus reduce load and traffic. ;)

cheers.
"referrer spam" - I knew there would be a more accepted term for it!

I'd been thinking about sorting out hosting and was leaning towards Wordpress to replace Blogger.

hmmmm...

argl, I completely missed that you have no control over your website ;) I wondered why the comment for was so ugly - hehe. Wordpress seems to be the way to go. I love it!

It's the "next blog" button (like the one at the top of your screen). That "next blog" button doesn't just take you to a random blog next - what they do is randomly select a different blog, Y, from the blogosphere for a period of X minutes and for those X minutes anybody that clicks a "next blog" button will get to blog Y.

I get the same thing happening on my site. All the blogs those people are coming from will have a "next blog" button - check it out next time.

Hope that made sense. If not, then, you know... *shrug*

Thanks "juliet is bleeding": that makes complete sense. I'd kinda forgotten about that button, the "Make poverty history" banner blocks that button on my blog at the moment.

I've used that "next blog" button for random browsing before. But gets really boring when you get 1000 entry blogs all with links to viagra supplements in, three times in a row...
